Hotel in Santorini
In the landscape we face, Aegean Sea and the characteristic sunset of Oia unfold. The bright blue sea, the fragile aspa, the golden colored plants and the dark stones, form a landscape as unique as Santorini itself. The hotel was designed with respect to this particular place. The rooms, made of stone, have been shaped to face the sun as it sets, with private pools that further enhance the sense of “insularity”, creating a virtual continuity of the sea inside the room. As the sunset invades the space, it sparkles, as it reflects on the specially designed metal surfaces of the bathroom, and thus follows the guest through all his activities.
The public areas of the building are divided into two categories. The first and most extrovert, is the communal swimming pool that occupies the main building’s roof and offers an unobstructed view of the Aegean Sea. Located at its’ center, sunken and surrounded by water, is designed the pool bar, alive throughout the day, as water strongly encircles it.
Finally, a much more introvert and private activity takes place at the hotel’s spa. From the moment of entering the space, the user’s senses are enhanced. The tangible and the intangible here coexist, as the user enters a space full of steaming water and dark, massive rocks. Passing through all the typical activities of a spa, the guest arrives at the heated indoor pool, where the boundaries between private and non-private are no longer distinct. Under a large dome and in the large pool, small concrete ‘’baskets’’ are immersed into the water, allowing the user to exist virtually in the pool without even getting wet.
The overall approach focuses on designing a hotel where the guest has the ability to completely isolate and search for the landscape elements that will inspire him, but also the opportunity to co-exist – always around water – with others who are maybe searching for the same.
